Tarka Valley Railway holds grand reopening event

The first train departed Torrington railway station on Saturday 5 August 2023 at a formal event attended by the train crew who operated the last passenger train that departed the station in 1982.

This marks the completion of phase 1 of the Tarka Valley Railway project to restore this section of railway. Phase 2 will see the railway extended to the first bridge over the River Torridge, where a railway halt will be created.

Although regular trains ended in 1965 specials ran on the line through to 1982, with the line surviving because of milk and china clay trains.
