Network Rail has suggested that light rail or tram-train is a contender for restoring Wisbech to the rail network.
They were commissioned to review the work completed so far and highlighted that the business case retains too many assumptions and permutations to confirm viability. There are concerns about the assumptions made with regards to the Ely Area Capacity Enhancement (EACE) programme, which is currently at risk.
The Transport and Infrastructure committee of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority will meet on Wednesday to discuss if they should continue to push forward with heavy rail despite the risk that no capacity could be available for trains to run through to Cambridge or develop an option assessment report for a service running between March and Wisbech, which would remove dependencies on EACE
I would welcome a heavy rail (March to Wisbech shuttle if necessary) service for this line. With the proposed reopening of the Snailwell curve to Newmarket the Ely to Cambridge route would not need to be so congested. I would far prefer this to a tram connection.
