A business case considering the potential to expand the Isle of Wight railway network has been submitted by the Isle of Wight Council to the Department for Transport.
The authority is seeking further government support from the Restoring Your Railway funding programme to advance proposal to reconnect Newport and Ventnor to the rail network.
The report took forward two options to expand the rail network including the creation of the rail link to Newport via Blackwater, which is not the most direct rail formation between Ryde and Newport (that formation via Wootton is currently occupied by the Isle of Wight Steam Railway)
This was identified as the most viable element of the project to be progressed as an initial phase, at an estimated cost of £67 million.
