Headbolt Lane station funding confirmed

Plans for a railway station at Headbolt Lane have stepped forward following agreement to allocate £66m from the Transforming Cities Fund.

The full scheme includes the extension of the Merseyrail network beyond the existing Kirkby station. It supports provision of the extension towards Skelmersdale, which would extend beyond the new station and then on to a new branch line.

A three platform station will be constructed with 300 park and ride spaces.

Network Rail is currently progressing the outline design for the project and preparing a full planning application for the necessary approvals. Work is aimed to start later this year and it is planned for the new station to be operational in 2023.
