Interim station option proposed for Cambridge South

Following feedback that a railway station at Cambridge South would not be delivered until at least 2027, work has begun on developing plans for an interim station that could open before then.

The permanent railway station relies on a number of key items that also pose a risk to the planned delivery date of 2027. They are:

  • Ely North Junction capacity upgrade
  • Four tracks south of Cambridge
  • East West Rail (particularly how it will interface with the network in the Cambridge area)
  • Signalling Upgrades in the region

The plans for interim station include identifying the services that could call without changing the existing timetable and minimising the amount of infrastructure changes for a two platform railway station.
