Looking back at 2018, we can see that numerous proposals to add railway stations and lines to the railway network continue to make the headlines.
Three railway stations joined the national rail network (Kenilworth, Maghull North and Corfe Castle) boosting the connectivity of the communities that they serve. Kenilworth marks the conclusion of the five stations that were partially funded through the first round of the New Stations Fund. Corfe Castle utilised funding for Coastal Communities providing regular services between the heritage railway and the mainline network using stock from a train operating company. Maghull North supported the development of land for an abandoned project to build a prison.
The Tram-Train scheme for Rotherham Parkgate also opened, expanding the Sheffield Supertram and providing an opportunity to trial the Tram-Train concept in the UK.
Finally, the extension of the GWSR to Broadway was opened.
Planning applications were submitted for Robroyston and Horden. Progress has been made on numerous other proposals.
Some projects have not fared as well
Crossrail was expected to open this year but issues with the project have led to cost overruns and a postponement of the opening date into 2019 or 2020.
Croxley rail link is under threat from escalating costs.
