A report presented to the cabinet of Northumberland County Council has raised doubts about the costs put forward by Network Rail to reopen the railway station at Gilsland. A 2016 pre-GRIP feasibility study states that the reopening was feasible and was estimated to cost £28.64m. Further discussions have suggested that this was a worst case estimate with a permanent station expected to cost approximately £7.5m.
It was recognised that to navigate the initial four stages of GRIP, £450k-£750k would be required. It was proposed and agreed that this project should be included in the Borderlands Growth Deal.
